Xilinx to buy network interface card vendor Solarflare

25 April 2019

Field programmable gate array (FPGA) vendor Xilinx Inc. has agreed to buy Solarflare Communications Inc., a maker of ultra-low latency network interface cards (NIC).

The acquisition will enable Xilinx to combine its FPGAs, system-on-chips and ACAP solutions with Solarflare’s NIC technology and application acceleration software. Xilinx said the deal will help with its data center strategy and transition to a platform company.

For the past two years, both companies have been collaborating on networking technology, recently demonstrating the first joint solution — a single-chip FPGA 100 G smart NIC with 100 million packets per-second receive and transmit at less than 75 w.

Following regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close in Xilinx’s fiscal year of 2020. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move comes after Xilinx reported revenues of $3.06 billion for the fiscal year 2019, up 24% from the prior fiscal year.
