Signify, formerly Philips Lighting, has installed light emitting diode (LED) lighting in more than 40 buildings in Shanghai's financial and tourist districts.
Of these buildings, three waterfront bridges have been given an LED facelift as well as the Shangri-La Hotel and the Shanghai Jinmao Tower. In all, more than 50,000 connected light points stretching 1.2 kilometers along the waterfront were used in the project. The Yangpu, Nanpu and Xupu bridges now light up using Philips' Color Kinetics LEDs.
Signify said the lighting will not only allow for more expressive night scenes but will also give municipalities control and real-time information on the performance of individual light points. The lighting is also expected to save the city 50% to 70% on its annual lighting costs compared to conventional lighting, the company said.
Shanghai’s financial and transport hub is located on the Yangtze River Delta and is one of the busiest container ports in the world. The lighting was part of the regeneration project of the financial and tourist districts in China’s second largest city by population.
The installed lighting can be remotely monitored and controlled individually or in groups to create night scenes for celebrations, holidays or other events. A late-night mode can be switched on for energy savings as well as to further extend the life of the lights.
