Chipmaker onsemi has introduced a family of real-time indirect time-of-flight (iToF) sensors for long distance measurements and 3D imaging of fast-moving objects.

Called the Hyperlux ID series, the sensors provide a comprehensive view of the environment without the need for separate sensors for visual and depth data. The sensors use global shutter pixel architecture and on-board storage to capture an entire scene and process depth measurement in real-time.

Other features include:

  • Produces monochrome images and depth data simultaneously
  • Enables depth sensing up to 30 meters
  • Operates under dynamic conditions
  • Captures fast-moving objects

Onsemi said iToF sensors have previously been limited in use due to minimal range, poor performance in harsh light and inability to calculate depth on moving objects.

With automation and robotics becoming pervasive in industrial markets, precision measurements of moving objects with high-resolution images can help reduce errors, downtime and optimize processes in manufacturing systems.

Additionally, the sensors:

  • Enhance facial recognition
  • Gesture detection
  • 3D video conferencing
