Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corp. has introduced its first wireless microcontroller that integrates Bluetooth 5.3 low energy based on its 22 nanometer process technology.

The technology is designed to provide functions such as RF while lowering power consumption. By using a smaller die area for the same functionality, the smaller chips have similar performance but a higher integration of peripherals and memory, Renesas said.

The microcontrollers are an extension of Renesas’ RA family of 32-bit Arm Cortex-M microcontrollers and provide Bluetooth 5.3 low energy with integrated software-defined radio (SDR). Additionally, the MCUs can utilize previous Bluetooth 5.1 angle or arrival/angle of departure and low power stereo audio transmission products employed over Bluetooth 5.2 isochronous channels.

Renesas said it will combine the 22 nm MCUs with numerous compatible devices from its portfolio to create a different combination of devices that can work seamlessly together and optimized for low-risk design and faster time to market. More than 300 products can be combined to accelerate design processes, Renesas said.
