Precision current sense resistors — two and four terminal
Low values without stability or accurate ways to measure change result in multiple design considerations. When using low value resistors it is important to select a precision product with low TCR values. This low value will assure that the resistance value remains constant as the temperature increases. The lower the resistor value the more important the TCR and tolerance become. Small changes, if left uncompensated by the circuit, can result in largely inaccurate current measurements.
Another way to assure accurate measurement is the use of a four terminal resistor. The separation of the voltage and current terminals allows for a more accurate measurement in the circuit. This design assists in eliminating or greatly reducing the added resistance of the measurement leads. Resistors with four terminals also save board space as these terminals are integrated into the product and reduces the required traces to create the extra terminals.
