MagnaChip Semiconductor Corp. has expanded its high frame rate (HFR) organic light emitting diode (OLED) display driver integrated circuit (DDIC) product line for smartphones.
The technology improves the image quality by increasing the number of frames used per second and ups the smooth and vivid experiences for users. The new OLED DDIC market is small but produces frame rates of FHD+ at 144 Hz and QHD+ at 120 Hz.
The OLED DDIC product line is to be driven by the wave of new 5G smartphones. Market research firm Omdia forecasts global 5G smartphone shipments will reach 200 million units in 2020 and will grow five times to 1 billion units. 5G smartphones are expected to account for 60% of all smartphone shipments by 2023.
Because of this, the expansion of the HFR OLED DDIC product line is expected to continue with additional products rolled out in the future.
