SK Telecom has unveiled what it claims is the first 5G smartphone equipped with a quantum random number generator (QRNG).
The Galaxy A Quantum smartphone is equipped with a QRNG chipset measuring 2.5 mm by 2.5 mm and allows users access to selected services in a safe and secure manner by generating true random numbers that cannot be hacked.
The chipset is integrated with quantum enhanced cryptography, allowing customers to access security through two-factor authentication for T-ID, an integrated login ID, biometric authentication-based payment and blockchain-based mobile e-certification service.
“With the release of the Galaxy A Quantum, we are opening a new chapter in the history of the quantum security industry,” said Ryu Young-sang, vice president and head of MNO business of SK Telecom. “We will offer differentiated security solutions to enable our customers to use ICT services in a safe and secure manner in the hyper-connected era of 5G.”
With the QRNG smartphone, users will go through two-factor authentication for login and one-time password authentication. Advanced protection will also be used in payments through SK’s online payment app and SK plans to expand the feature to mobile apps through the SK pay affiliate stores. An additional layer of security will be added to a quantum wallet when users store their personal certificates.
SK said it plans to open application programming interfaces (APIs) to developers through the SK Open API Portal and support the development of relevant technologies to expand the ecosystem.
The QRNG-equipped Galaxy A Quantum smartphone is expected to be released later this month.
