Measuring and correcting microLED display uniformity

02 September 2020

As individual emissive elements, microLEDs commonly exhibit luminance and color variations at the pixel level. These variations require each microLED to be measured and adjusted individually to ensure visual uniformity across the display. Thus, a measurement and correction system for microLED manufacture must be capable of precise quantification of the output of each emissive element (the individual LED or subpixel), with very low takt times to correct the high quantity of emitters in a single display and to support low-waste, high-volume production processes.

Radiant Vision Systems is chosen by leading display innovators to improve the visual quality of emerging emissive technologies like microLEDs, miniLEDs and OLEDs. As seen in this application at Jasper Display Corporation, Radiant’s pixel-level measurement and uniformity correction (demura) solution helps manufacturers achieve their goals for efficient microLED display development while ensuring visually perfect display quality. In this video, Radiant’s demura solution rapidly measures the luminance of each subpixel in a microLED microdisplay (designed for augmented reality headsets) to calibrate absolute pixel-to-pixel uniformity for all display bright states.

Radiant Vision Systems pixel-level measurement solution includes a high-resolution imaging photometer and specially developed software with image processing and analysis algorithms that optimize luminance measurement and uniformity calculation at the pixel and subpixel level. Entire displays are measured in as little as 1.4 seconds for a complete measurement data set reporting all subpixel luminance values. Calculations are made on-board the Radiant test system and can be applied to calibrate display uniformity using in-display electronics.

In this video, you will learn about:

  • Uniformity challenges in microLED displays
  • The impact of pixel-level measurement and uniformity correction (demura) on display quality and production efficiency
  • How Radiant’s high-resolution ProMetric imaging system and software are applied for rapid demura of microLED microdisplays, like those produced using Jasper Display’s technology
