Google and Polestar are working on a new human-machine interface (HMI) for vehicles including an interface powered by Android with Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store built in.
Polestar said it will use Android as a platform to build personalized experiences for the drivers displaying profiles, permissions and other habits or preferences.
The Google Assistant can use advanced speech technology to expand to more languages, understand local accents and provide natural conversational flow, rather than a list of pre-set options. Video streaming from popular apps and services will be made for occupants when the vehicle is parked and during charging.
Other features of the HMI under development will be eye-tracking, proximity sensors, screens that alter brightness and content based on conditions and reactions to the driver and systems that warn drivers when they are looking at the screen rather than the road ahead. Integrated advanced driver assistance systems (ADA) will use details through Google Maps to promote safer maneuvers on the road.
“We already showed the world we take digital integration in our cars seriously and are open to collaborate with experts in these fields,” said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. “Now we continue that story, sharing a vision that is even more in tune with the preferences of our individual customers. Building on the Android infotainment system in Polestar 2, our future systems will make life in our cars easier, safer and more fun.”
