The above Saturday Night Live skit is about Alexa Silver, a fictional Amazon artificial intelligence (AI) device made specifically for seniors. A medical companion product like this — EliteHealth's AVA — actually exists outside the TV universe.
AVA is a virtual nurse and health companion that works through any voice-driven device, landline or smartphone. EliteHealth targeted AVA as a critical component of their process of improving wellness, and it has proven to reduce re-admissions, increase longevity and enrich the lives of their senior patients. Through a partnership with Care Angel, EliteHealth is striving to be at the forefront of the senior care market. AVA is the next evolution of remote patient monitoring and care management.
AVA is currently being used by members of EliteHealth as part of their 360-degree approach to the healthcare continuum. It can engage with patients through a one to two minute care call and ask questions about mental and physical well-being while gathering vitals, remind patients to take their medications, and deliver doctor instructions and health education to patients. AVA guides patients to the proper actions that may need to be taken. It also learns about the patient and adapts their care plants to what the patient needs as their health changes. AVA can also automatically alert care providers when there may be a concern or immediate need. AVA can transfer a care call directly to the nurse triage line if clinical service is needed in real time. This can help prevent unnecessary ER, urgent care or hospital visits and keep healthcare costs down.
EliteHealth seeks to engage caregivers with their patients’ emotional, mental and physical needs through a continuum of care. The company recently decided to implement AVA through all of their patient care offices as a virtual assistant.
AI technology can enable real patient-centric offerings like meal delivery, home telemonitoring, medication review and medical staff home visits. A recent pilot program of EliteHealth offerings showed that frequency of its patient touch points at home and in a clinical setting was the key to reducing patient medical costs and re-admissions to hospitals. These improved results were produced by extending health service into the patients’ homes, where they were the most at ease.
