Video: Drones and Robots Team Up for Nuclear Accident Monitoring

13 June 2017

A remote platform for monitoring nuclear accidents and high levels of radiation has been created by the Robot Lab from the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

The RAM platform consists of a ground all-terrain vehicle, a drone and a radiation sensor module that can determine the extent of nuclear accidents and aid in radiation map generation.

The unmanned ground vehicle is used for ground accident monitoring and for carrying the drone. It has a maximum speed of 60 kilometers and can operate for 5 hours over 1 kilometer distances.

The drone monitors accidents from the air carrying with it the radiation sensor module. The drone can fly over 1 kilometer while the sensor module records radiation dose map generation with a detection range of 100 sieverts per hour.
