Global electronic distributor DigiKey is now supporting direct shipments from European suppliers to European customers through its marketplace program.

The move will give vendors in Europe access to a wider variety of electronic components that can be bought at cost savings, efficiency and to accelerate progress for engineers and designers, DigiKey said.

The cost and environmental savings are realized by not shipping the products to the U.S. first, then shipping them back to Europe. This accelerates the time for electronic components to be sent to European vendors and eliminates shipping prices and the impact on the environment due to shipping.

Currently about 30,000 SKUs are eligible for the program and DigiKey said it will still handle every transaction. This includes more types of products that are able to be sold and were previously unavailable like:

  • Lithium batteries
  • Heavy automation equipment
  • Chemicals and adhesives
  • Solar products

DigiKey said it will expand the diversity of its products and suppliers in the DigiKey Marketplace in the future, including electronic components such as bare PCB boards, industrial automation, test and measurement, IoT solutions and more.
