Hyundai Motor America is partnering with Parkopedia to launch its first in-vehicle payment system that will allow U.S. drivers to locate, reserve and pay for parking at 6,000 locations.
This is accomplished all inside the 2024 Hyundai Kona, coming in the fall of this year. An additional nine Hyundai models will get Hyundai Pay via model year changes or over-the-air updates that will include the Parkopedia parking payment service. Future versions of the platform will have additional features included for electric vehicle use.
How it works
Hyundai owners will be able to store credit card information inside the vehicle’s system via a touchscreen. Via the Bluelink connected car system, scalable in-car payments will expand to include other uses and selected scenarios that are part of daily drivers and longer trips.
The payments are kept secure using tokenization and through the Parkopedia payment platform will be able to find and pay for off-street garage parking as well as on-street curbside services in the future. Drivers can also access the service through Hyundai’s Bluelink app to view, book and retrieve past parking sessions.
According to Parkopedia, about 94% of U.S. drivers complain about the difficulties of finding local parking. Of this, 18% also encounter issues finding a space on every parking search. This new service will help address this stress and problem with finding parking, especially in major cities.
“American motorists report significant challenges in finding parking and a distinct desire for in-car parking services, with U.S. Hyundai drivers showing a particular interest in accessing parking information through their vehicles,” said Hans Puvogel, COO at Parkopedia. “We are proud to be the first in-car commerce service to launch on the future-proof Hyundai Pay platform, which shows significant faith in the auto-grade quality of our services from one of the leading automakers. We look forward to additional models and vehicle services going live in the future.”
