Video: Innoviz secures multi-year lidar deal with Volkswagen

03 August 2022

Volkswagen will use the lidar from Innoviz Technologies in a new deal that will span multiple years and generate more than $4 billion in revenue for the Israeli startup.

Innoviz will directly supply Cariad, Volkswagen’s software company, with lidar in the first deal as a tier-1 supplier. This is the third major design win with an automaker for Innoviz.

Lidar is used in the development of autonomous vehicles that will eventually be on the road and that Volkswagen is developing along with other companies in the automotive sector. However, currently lidar can be used as a major component of advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), some of which are currently being deployed in vehicles already.

Cariad will initially use the lidar for ADAS features and will be used eventually in automated vehicles within the Volkswagen brands.

Volkswagen will use the InnovizTwo lidar sensor and perception software that initially will support Level 2 autonomous features, but will also support Level 3 and Level 4 in the future. The InnovizTwo lidar has a detection range up to 300 meters with a maximum field of view of 120° by 40° with pre-configurable frame rates of 10, 15 or 20 fps.

The InnovizTwo will find its way into autonomous vehicles primarily but could also be used in autonomous trucks, sidewalk delivery robots, industrial drones, logistics machines and heavy machinery.

In the video, the Innoviz lidar is shown perceiving its environment and guiding a vehicle through multiple toll booths and roadways.
