MediaTek unveils first 7 nm 8 K TV chip

MediaTek has introduced what it claims is the world’s first 7 nm 8 K digital TV system-on-chip (SoC) build using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.’s (TSMC's) manufacturing process.

Called the Pentonic 2000, the SoC includes artificial intelligence (AI) engines, motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC), versatile video coding (VVC) decoding and picture-in-picture (PiP) technology.

Additionally, the Pentonic 2000 SoC supports VVC H.266 media and 8 K 120 Hz displays with an integrated MEMC engine. Other features include:

  • Ultra-wide memory bus
  • Ultra-fast UFS 3.1 storage
  • Wireless connectivity for MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E or even 5G cellular modems.

Compared to TSMC’s 16 nm process technology used in other consumer electronics devices, the 7 nm process gives a 30% speed improvement or 55% power reduction and more than three times the logic density.

The process technology also enables edge AI in consumer devices for tasks such as upscaling high definition or 4 K media to 8 K resolutions. Also, the power savings will result in thermal savings for consumers.
