Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) has agreed to purchase Macronix’s 6 inch wafer fab and equipment at Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan.
The $90.8 million deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
The move will officially launch Foxconn’s entry into the manufacturing and development of wide band gap semiconductors, specifically silicon-on-carbide (SiC), and paving the way for a long-term commitment to chip development.
Foxconn said the purchase aligns with its 3+3 strategy, which is focused on the electric vehicles (EVs), digital health robotics plus artificial intelligence, semiconductor and advanced communication markets. SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are used heavily in EVs.
For Macronix, it will focus on 12 inch wafers, R&D and manufacturing of advanced 3D NAND flash and NOR flash products.
