Arbe and Qamcom are collaborating to expand Arbe’s 4D imaging radar chipset into new use cases including trucks, buses, delivery pods and industrial robots, drones and more.
Through the partnership, Arbe’s 4D radar will bring perception to industry dynamic and static applications. Qamcom will offer the customization of the imaging radar systems based on the Arbe chipset that will serve a unique function for each vehicle or application.
Arbe’s 4D radar can separate, track and identify objects in 2K ultra-high resolution in both azimuth and elevation with 48 receiving and 48 transmitting RF channels and a dedicated processor chip. The technology will allow industrial or aerial vehicles to offer advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving where it was not available before.
“Traditional or contemporary radar solutions don’t solve the challenges that autonomous vehicles face,” said Johan Lassing, CEO of Qamcom. “Arbe revolutionized radar by creating a sensor that provides a never-before-seen image which is close to the image that vision based sensors achieve that also has the properties of radar–Arbe’s 4D Imaging Radar Solution has the potential to be the primary sensor candidate for the sensor suite of any autonomous and semi-autonomous applications and next generation perception platforms.”
The 4D imaging technology offers perception capabilities for various applications in use cases including off-road, indoors, high speeds, long ranges and a wide field of view. The technology enables real-time inference of a vehicle’s ego-velocity and mapping and localization in unmapped areas. Post processing the radar data allows obstacle detection and avoidance, tracking and classifying objects in the entire field of view to determine their motion vector.
Additionally, the 4D radar provides accurate free space mapping to distinguish between drivable and non-drivable environments in any weather, lighting or challenging environment conditions such as debris and dust, which challenges optical sensors.
The solution being customized through Qamcom’s capabilities is essential, the companies said, due to the equipment — such as tractors, mining equipment and delivery pods — all needing different requirements for perception.
