Telecom Rakuten Mobile has introduced a new 5G smartphone for the Japanese market that features what the company claims is the first mobile Felica-equipped smartphone with a front camera embedded in the display.
Mobile Felica is a contactless RFID smart card system in Japan that is used primarily as electronic money cards. Felica does not require a battery to operate and is powered by a card reader when the card comes in range of a terminal. When the data transfer is complete, the power shuts off to the card.
The Rakuten Big smartphone contains a 6.9 in organic light emitting diode (OLED) display that is completely notch-less, by embedding the front camera inside the display itself. The phone includes an in-display fingerprint sensor, an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and it is SIM lock free.
The Rakuten Big is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G 5G mobile platform with the Octa-core 2.4 GHz processor. The smartphone features 6 GB of internal memory, a 4,000 mAh lithium ion battery and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 32 megapixel front camera. The four lens artificial intelligence (AI) camera is made up of a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro camera and a depth-sensing camera that can capture moments with the right amount of background blur.
