U.K. telecom O2 has selected Ericsson to deploy its 5G radio access network (RAN) across numerous cities in the U.K., upgrading the existing 2G/3G/4G sites as part of a network modernization program.

Ericsson previously launched O2’s 5G commercial network in October of last year and this partnership extends that relationship to include hardware, software and service upgrades. Multiband and wide-band 5G radios will be used in the rollout as well as new 5G-optimized basebands to build sustainable sites in preparation for future increases in 5G coverage and capacity.

Additionally, an innovation cluster will be developed as a collaboration platform to evaluate and test future mobile architecture, technology and systems as O2 builds network migration to 5G standalone architecture.

Ericsson will support O2 with its rollout of commercial 5G to towns and locations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with enhanced mobile broadband services as well as increase connectivity to U.K. subscribers.
