About a year and a half ago, LynQ launched a successful IndieGoGo campaign for its location gadget, raising $1.7 million in presales for more than 20,000 units.
After shipping to its campaign backers, LynQ will announce at CES 2020 that it is officially commercially shipping the LynQ people compass, which keeps people together by locating anyone without relying on smartphones, networks or infrastructure of any kind.
The gadget is billed as something that might be used by doomsday preppers or by those going camping or hiking outdoors where infrastructure or cellular networks may not be found. The company said it tested the device in multiple industries such as winter sports, festivals, theme parks and even the government.
The device allows groups of up to 12 to find each other across miles. The device is weather-proof and will display each users’ distance and direction from others in real-time. The devices are paired in seconds and a click allows users to move between group members, displaying names and boundaries for the group and receiving sound, optical and vibration alerts the instant someone leaves a zone — so it could be used to keep an eye out for kids or those with special needs.
LynQ said it can be used in disaster relief, emergency first responder and government applications where finding someone is a matter of life and death or when infrastructure is knocked out. It could also be used to keep tabs on small children, pets and family members at risk of wandering.
CES 2020 takes place Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas.
