A number of innovations have come to the hospitality industry based on internet of things (IoT) technology, but with recent innovations becoming more available, the use of the technology in hotels is likely to expand substantially in the near future.

Signify, formerly Philips Lighting, is bringing these innovations to hotels with its Interact Hospitality management system that allows guests to alter lighting, temperature and make room service requests with a touch of a button. Additionally, the smart system informs staff when a room is occupied in order to respond to requests faster, optimize operations and save energy.

The first implementation of the system is being integrated into the 1,261-room Swissôtel The Stamford in Singapore.

Signify said the smart hotel of the future won’t require a room key card, won’t need light switches and will remember a guest’s preferences because the lights will turn on automatically, a smartphone will let you enter the room and IoT will monitor if someone is in the room or not and what they prefer.

Interact Hospitality allows managers to monitor the property through a single dashboard by integrating lighting, sensors, HVAC and property management into the system. The system’s open API allows multiple hotel systems to be integrated so real-time information can be fed into everything from housekeeping to engineering.

At the same time, the system gives the hotel energy savings by using occupancy sensors that can automatically turn down systems — HVAC and lighting — in unoccupied rooms.

The Swissôtel The Stamford is one of the tallest hotels in Southeast Asia and the first hotel to integrate the Interact Hospitality system. The renovation with the management system is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
