Lowe’s Companies Inc. is launching two apps that work with Apple’s new ARKit capabilities to transform smartphones into powerful measurement and design aides.
The app, called Measured, is currently available for download at Apple’s app store. Measured is one of the first accessible, easy-to-use, apps that use augmented reality (AR) to measure an object or distance within the phone’s camera view.
The second app, called Envisioned, will be available in early October and allows users to view high-fidelity digital images of furnishings at scale in their home or commercial space. It leverages ARKit’s augmented reality capabilities. Both these apps build upon Lowe’s leadership in developing augmented, virtual and mixed reality applications for retail.
Using the iPhone (6S or newer) camera to allow users to measure anything in the real world quickly and easily and save it for later. Measured provides the user with a good balance of precision and play. Measured provides instant measurements and users can share their measured moments on social media from the app. Users can measure everything from the height of a chandelier for a foyer to the height of a child to send to far away family. The app was developed to be the everyday go-to tool for all consumers.
Envisioned is a fully featured, end-to-end designed and shopping app built specifically for ARKit compatibility for iPhone models 6S and newer. Customers navigate through the designer-inspired product catalog. When an item is selected, users can place a high-quality, accurate-to-scale 3D version into their room and then modify it to fit their vision. The app’s photo mode allows users to capture images, share and purchase. The app integrates with TheMine.com to provide a seamless shopping experience with high fidelity 3D models that are generated by Lowe’s Innovation Labs proprietary 3D content creation and distribution technology called LIL 3D.
Lowe's is exploring new and emerging technologies to provide helpful tools for customers and employees, including new consumer augmented reality applications and delivering advanced uses for retail.
